Abha Masterplan

The proposed master plan is organised with villages and town centres located according to the topography to create unique and defined places in the landscape. The villages are arranged around hilltop, hillside and wadi environments, with four town centres in the flatter valleys. Three special hubs frame the entrances to the site: one retail hub and two school hubs.
The team studied historical villages of the area and looked at how their model could evolve into today’s way of living. The residential typologies are grouped to create a cluster of homes and the clusters are then gathered together to create a village.
The strategy allowed us to adapt and evolve a traditional vernacular house to create town houses, villas, duplexes and apartment buildings whilst maintaining the vertical quality of the original.
